Cricket: An Englishmen Game

Recently, while I was surfing through the web for the daily news, something caught my eyes. Nothing sensational, but just a common event nowadays. The news I saw was about the discretion of two English cricketers Eoin Morgan and Alex Hales, who took their safety too seriously and opted out of the tour of Bangladesh. Though it is none of my business, I found it quite amusing. I thought maybe I'll give my reasons for it.

British had ruled almost all of the world for the last two centuries. There were a few other colonial powers but never had quite the impact as the British had. They introduced a lot of culture and were actually very disciplined in their approach of spreading 'The English Style'. Some may disagree, but the facts remains that the aristocracy or adaptation to the English way is really deep-rooted in the systems of many of its colonies. We gradually took up their way of living, and thus we learned quite a few things about their games, sports, etc among others. So, when it comes to cricket people look up towards the British with some genuine respects. Eoin Morgan and Alex Hales made sure that the English Cricketing community lose some of it with their withdrawal.

Nobody is denying the fact that the security issues in different part of the world specially in Pakistan or Bangladesh has been a bone of contention in the sporting community. It would been totally understandable if the whole team opted out, or the ECC rejecting the tour schedule. Still, after many assurances ECC accepted the itinerary and it was content with the security detailing. Eoin Morgan, being a captain of the national side must have this moral ethics about his decision of opting out. He simply disregarded the respect and reputation of his national cricketing board, and violated the trust of his teammates. He never even had this realization that a score of sportsmen and their support staff have not opted out due to any such whimsical decision.

But what has been done, has been done. No, I am not a Eoin Morgan or Alex Hales fan, nor do I belong to any Cricket Board. I felt as a sportsman we are looked upon as heroes and should behave like one. As a human being, I thought it would be better if famous people take accountability about the image it projects on the mindset of normal people by disregarding the responsibility that is placed on them.
